This is what’s in the first Humble Monthly Bundle

Those who have considered the Humble Bundle Monthly Bundle are likely wondering if it’s worth the cash. Read on, then, for we have the answer.

In short: Yes. Yes it is.

The Humble Bundle‘s original business model was as simple as it was genius: group a few games together, let people decide what to pay, and then split the money between developers, Humble Bundle itself and, most importantly, various charities.

It has since diversified into smaller bundles that come out every week, ebook bundles, mobile gaming packages and even abandoning the “bundle” altogether with a store.

Its most recent move is the “Humble Monthly Bundle“, a subscription service that apes the famous Loot Crate; that is, you pay a certain amount of money and receive a number of mystery games every month.

Now that the first Humble Monthly Bundle has been revealed, let’s see what it offers and if it’s worth the asking price of $12 (R171).

The November / December bundle contains the following:

  • Saints Row IV
  • Besiege
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Lethal League
  • Sanctuary RPG
  • Towerfall Ascension
  • Legend of Grimrock II

At R171, seven highly rated games sounds like an absolute steal, but to make sure, let’s look at the current prices for each on Steam:

TOTAL COST: $103.93

At $103.93 (R1 475.20), buying the games on their own will cost quite a bit more.

But there is another side to this story, and that is sales and discounts.

While the current prices of the games do result in a much higher overall price, what if we were to look at the discounted amounts?

Using Enhanced Steam, a Google Chrome add-on, we can see any game’s historical lowest price. These would be the cheapest the game has been in the past and a reasonable price to pick it up for, especially with Steam’s end of year sales coming up soon:

TOTAL COST: $30.52
TOTAL COST: $30.52

Even at the greatly discounted lowest prices, the individual games still come to a total of  $30.52 (R433.18), which is almost three times the price of the bundle. That’s a good deal, then.

But what about the games?

While the bundle may be great value, what of the games in it? Every game included has a favourable user ratings on Steam, with many receiving the highest community-honour of the “Overwhelming Positive” title, a moniker earned from positive reader ratings.

In our opinion, the selection of games is superb and we must credit Humble Bundle with coming through on its promise of “highly curated” content.

As is the problem with all bundles, there is the chance that you already own one or more of these games, or of simply being unhappy with what you get. This is a problem with all bundle subscription bundle services, though, so we can’t count that against what’s on offer here.

Another problem that may crop up in the future is a decline in the quality off games. This is the first month of the service so we’d expect them to go all out to make it as appealing as possible.

We’ll be keeping tabs on this service and come up with a longer-term recommendation after a few months. For now, this looks like another winner from the people behind Humble Bundle, and perhaps more importantly, a big win for PC gamers on a budget.
