[WATCH] Rocket League recreated in the real world… kinda

When we reviewed Rocket League we found the combination of small cars, big rockets and silly physics to be endlessly charming and hell of a lot of fun. It did leave us wanting, though, for more play variety, more cars and, most of all, the ability to somehow play this fantastical new sport in real life.

Now Linus Media Group have done just that with their YouTube channel ChannelSuperFun.

Using six RC cars, each decked out with a team colour and GoPros mounted on custom 3D printed mounts, a game of real life Rocket league was played out, and we get to watch it.

Now, as great as that was, we have to point out a few things. At $20 (R277), Rocket League is absolute chump change compared to the money that would need to be dropped to replicate what was done in this video. Let’s do some quick and dirty maths…

  • 6 X Arma Fury RC cars at $190 each = $1 140 (R15 838).
  • 6 X GoPro Hero 4 at R6 000 each = R36 000.
  • 6 X 3D printed mounts at around R40 each = R240.
  • Rental of a soccer field = R500.
  • Plastic ball = R50.
  • Total = R52 638.

This isn’t even considering the first person head-mounted cameras you’d need to invest in to get the same view you see in the video and the game, and the “hoverboard” scooter for the refferee. Oh, and we’re not going to get into the problems and costs involved with attaching actual rockets to the cars.

All told: if you have enough money to live out videogames in real life, please invite us for the next round of Rocket League and lobster on your yacht.
