[WATCH] The Marikana documentary the SABC and e.tv won’t show you

A South African documentary won the International Emmy for Best Documentary last night, but most of the country hasn’t seen it because the SABC and free-to-air channel, eTV haven’t aired it.

Directed by local filmmaker Rehad Desai and produced by Uhuru Productions, Miners Shot Down tells the story of the 34 miners killed on 16th August 2012 during protests at the Lonmin mine in Markiana.

The shootings attracted negative attention for the post-democratic government and the local mining industry and was labelled one of the worst assaults on civilians by police forces since the apartheid era.

The Emmy win has revived interest in an old petition put up on Amandla.mobi in 2014 to get the SABC and eTV to air Miners Show Down. Over 4 800 people have signed it so far.

In the meantime, the DA has also decided to make use of this golden opportunity, as it usually does, and has said it will push Minister Of Communications, Faith Muthambi, to have the documentary aired on the SABC, when she appears before parliament.

Thanks to the internet however, we won’t have to wait until terrestrial TV stations bow to pressure. Uhuru Productions has already posted the one and a half hour documentary on YouTube.
