Hard drives could get the boot as the SSD gets cheaper

Solid State Drives (SSDs), the natural evolution of the hard drive (HDD), may finally be about to kill off their forebears as their prices continue to drop.

According to research by TrendForce and DRAMeXchange, the end of this year marks the fourth straight quarter in which SSD prices have fallen above 10%.

This has prompted two big predictions for 2016: 256GB SSDs and HDDs will be close to price parity, and more than 30% of manufactured laptops will feature an SSD. In the third quarter of this year,  43.3 million laptops were shipped, and around 25% of them had SSDs.

A quick glance at local sites reveals that the cheapest 256GB SSD we could find is a discounted offering from Transcend for R1 399. In comparison, a hard drive of almost twice the capacity (500 GB) costs only R648.

What does this mean for you? If you’re in the market for a laptop in the future, it could come with a faster storage solution for less money. If you’re looking to add storage to a desktop, that will cost less too. At the end of the day you’ll be getting better performance for less money.
