SA Twitter belonged to students, Rugby and Big Brother Mzansi in 2015

Students involved in the #FeesMustFall protests, the Rugby World Cup and the Big Brother Mzansi reality show all have one thing in common – they were this year’s top trending hashtags on Twitter.

This is according to data released by the social network today as it wraps up 2015 and offers users a look at the top trends on Twitter this year.

News, sports and TV shows dominated the most tweeted topics in the local Twittersphere. These are the five top trending hashtags that emerged from each category:

“The #FeesMustFall campaign is a good example of how Twitter can influence change. It saw students taking to Twitter to protest against an increase in tertiary fees in the 2017 financial year. This campaign created country-wide awareness of the issues and ultimately forced government to enforce a ‘no fee increase’ policy for 2016,” Twitter said in a statement.

Across the global, the top trends include the hashtag #PrayforParis, the “laughing with tears of joy” face being the most tweeted emoji and the most retweeted tweet coming from One Direction member, Harry Styles, that was retweeted over 730 000 times.
