#ZumaMustFall evolves into a movement, national march scheduled for next week

If you thought the #ZumaMustFall hashtag was just another case of South Africans venting on Twitter for a day, think again. An movement has arisen rallying behind the hashtag and its organisers are scheduling a march to the Union Buildings, calling for the President to step down.

The #ZumaMustFall group on Facebook, which was created yesterday and so far has just over 4 000 likes, is hoping to borrow from the impact of the #FeesMustFall movement and rally South Africans behind the call to remove Jacob Zuma as president.

It’s not secret that citizens have long been calling for Zuma’s removal, but the issue that sparked the hashtag was the sudden firing and replacement of former finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene, which sent the rand into freefall.

“This page is not a place to campaign for opposition parties or complain about our wonderful country,” a recent post reads on the page. “It is a call for the people of South Africa to stand together and insist that the man who is destroying it be removed from power. We know that presidents can be ‘recalled’.

The group has created an event and scheduled the march to the Union Buildings for the 16th December, which ironically is Reconciliation Day.

Further details on how marchers will be organised are yet to be revealed, while other Facebook and Twitter users have called for the dates to be pushed back to mid-to-end February 2016, to give it more time to gather momentum.

A different event post on Facebook notes 1st February as the date for the march and already has 11 000 people signed up to attend.

An original event post for the march had to be taken down due to threats directed at the organiser, according to the group, and had to replaced by the current one, which states the #ZumaMustFall page as the organisers.
