Joburg begins search for greenest startup in the city to receive R1 million

The City of Joburg has launched another search for the greenest startup/entrepreneur in the metro through the Green City Startup contest, with a R1 million up for grabs.

Green City Startup looks for startups in energy, building, water, waste and transport with ideas to make Joburg a more environmentally friendly and sustainable space to live in.

The top 20 selected finalists are chosen to go through weeks of mentorship and pitching training as well as business development training and support at the University of Johannesburg’s Resolution Circle incubator.

The top 20 are then narrowed down to eight finalists, who then go head-to-head in a pitch session to decide the winner. The first and second runners-up receive a R500 000 and R300 000 prize respectively, while the winner walks away with the R1 million grand prize.

This year, Palesa Lesolang, creator of the Leak-Less toilet cistern valve, won the first edition of the competition, walking away with R1 million for his business.

For 2016, Green City Startup is switching things up a bit and will be giving not one, but two winners R1 million each.

Entries for the competition must be submitted on the Green City Startup website by the 22nd January.
