NSFAS puts up R1.4 billion to cover student registration fees

Students who qualify for university funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) are to have their 2016 registration fees covered by the public service.

NSFAS has set aside R1.4 billion to make sure students who qualify for the scheme do not have to pay any fees at the beginning of the new academic year.

The R1.4 billion sum is part of the amount that will make up the #FeesMustFall university funding shortfall for 2016 and is a move carried out as recommended by the Presidential Task Team set up by President Jacob Zuma to tackle short-term funding challenges at universities.

“NSFAS, working with the Department of Higher Education and Training, has confirmed the financial allocation for 2016/17 financial year to 26 universities,” NSFAS spokesperson Kagisho Mamabolo said.

“All Vice-Chancellors have received letters of confirmation outlining amount for each funding category – DHET General Funding; DHET Teacher training; DHET Final Year Funding; and DHET Disability Funding,” Mamabolo added.

Last week, the Office of the Presidency had also announced it was putting up R2.3 billion towards university funding, as per the Presidential Task Team’s recommendations.

“NSFAS will work closely with all its key stakeholders across the higher education sector to ensure the implementation of all the recommendations made by the task team,” Mamabolo said.
