Dark Christmas on the cards for Eastern Cape municipalities owing Eskom

It’s going to be a dark (and probably frustrating) Christmas for residents in four Eastern Cape municipalities, thanks to Eskom, the DA has announced

The power utility has introduced scheduled mass power cuts in the Gariep, Maletswai, Ikwezi, and Nxuba municipalities for nine hours, divided into three-hour intervals between 6am – 9am, 12pm – 2pm and 5pm – 9pm.

According to the DA, this is due to “bad financial management and fiscal irresponsibility of their respective municipal managers…despite many municipalities having already collected the monies due to Eskom” from residents.

The municipalities are not part of the 20 most indebted municipalities that were threatened with mass power cuts by Eskom earlier this year.

“This is unacceptable for many reasons but none more so than because residents have paid their accounts and many have made use of pre-paid meters, yet their municipalities have failed to pay this money over to Eskom and now the users and residents suffer the horrible reality of a power-less festive season,” Natasha Mazzone, DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, said.

Mazzone called on Minister of Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown to ensure that Eskom takes action and possibly presses criminal charges against the municipal managers involved.

“It must now be made known as to where the money that was collected for Eskom payment has gone and why these bills remain unpaid,” Mazzone said.
