Google Play Music launches in South Africa

Google has become the latest tech giant to launch a streaming music service in South Africa.

Google Music Play is available to local music lovers from today and it includes the service’s vast online digital music marketplace and the All Access subscription service.

The service has been launched with the introductory price of R49.99, which will be in place until January, and then the cost of the service will rise to R59.99 per month.

“Starting today, local music fans will have an unlimited pass to a huge library of music, on all of their devices, from all the major record companies, as well as top local and independent labels,” Google said in a statement.

Alongside the 35 million songs available for purchase, Google Music Play comes with an online locker where users can store up to 50,000 tracks of their own. They can also ‘pin’ playlists so they’re available offline on any of their linked devices, which will be something of a boon to music fans not wishing to burn through their monthly data package.

At the launch Director EMEA for Google Play Mark Bennett was asked whether local artists could upload their own creations and share them on the service and whether or not there were any ‘family’ setting  offering multiple user accounts for a discounted price. Bennett couldn’t confirm whether either of these features were available.

Google Music Play is entering an increasingly competitive market, which saw the demise of streaming music service Rdio a few months ago and which also saw recently the launch of Apple Music.
