Meet the folks trying to break a Guinness World Record for watching movies

A few weeks we noted that  11 crazy dedicated individuals were attempting to break a Guinness World Record this week for watching movies continuously for at least 120 hours and 23 minutes in Johannesburg.

At the end of November the only details we had were that Telkom would be attempting to stream the movies that would be watched by contestants, a first for the record attempt. We also knew that Suresh Joachim would be attempting to break the record along with 10 other contestants from South Africa who have just been announced.

Joining Joachim will be:

  • Sheetal Vallabh
  • David Erasmus
  • Tibor Donatus Kurucz
  • Thulisile Madyo
  • Tiberius TJo
  • Delon Munian
  • Aqeel Dockrat
  • Buhlebethu Hlatshwayo
  • Lionel Havenga
  • Clarissa Schoeman

According to a statement sent out by Telkom, the record attempt is a physically gruelling affair. Contestants will only be afforded a 10 minute break – between 90 minute movies – in which to rest, sleep or visit the bathroom.

Should that not sound strict enough contestants may not glance away from the movie for more than a few seconds at a time.

While it may seem like an easy feat Telkom also said,  “As a result of sleep deprivation during the event, participants are likely to experience an increase in blood pressure, mood swings, nausea and vomiting. Existing mental health issues may be exacerbated.”

If you want to witness the record breaking attempt at The Sheds in Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg, tickets can be purchased for R30 on iTickets.

Who knew watching movies could be so intense?
