Rdio to shut down on 22 December

Popular international music streaming service Rdio, which launched two local offerings in May, announced that it will officially shut down on 22nd December.

The company announced last month that it was being acquired by rival streaming service Pandora, and as a result will cease to exist.

“Over the course of five years, Rdio has grown to become a global community of music lovers — a place to discover, listen, and collect. We’re proud to have built that community with you,” it said in an email to subscribers.

While the company hasn’t been explicit about it, it does seem that Rdio will return in some shape of form in the future, either rebranded as Pandora (which has its own website and apps) or as something completely different.

In a farewell message, the service revealed that the most played album on the service was ‘Nothing Was The Same’ by Drake, and that the first song ever to be streamed was ‘California Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg)’ by Katy Perry.

As a thank you for listening, Rdio is giving users the chance to see their own statistics, and also the ability to download a list of the user’s playlists and favourites, so that those can be imported into other streaming services.
