[WATCH] Star Trek Beyond trailer

It seems that the imminent release of The Force Awakens is prompting a wave of trailers for blockbuster sci fi movie franchises.

Yesterday geeks the world over had their first look at the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence – the sequel to the 1996 smash in which the White House was nuked and aliens were defeated due to the fact they couldn’t install Norton anti-virus software on their mothership’s computer.

Today, Paramount has kicked out the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond, the third instalment in the series that effectively rebooted the Star Trek universe.

It makes sense; the Star Wars sees release tomorrow (finally!) and everyone in the world and their mate seems to have already bought tickets, so movie producers could be forgiven for thinking that interest in space operas is rather high at this stage.

For Star Trek Beyond, Justin Lin has stepped in as director, replacing J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two Star Trek films – mind you, he’s probably busy with that other sci fi franchise for the foreseeable future.

Lin, if you didn’t know, is the director of quite a few of the Fast & Furious films – the last four, in fact – and the new Star Trek trailer certainly shows it. As Kirk, Spock, Bones and the rest of the gang leap about the screen, the Beastie Boys’ track Sabotage can be heard pounding underneath. There’s even a couple of shots in which Kirk gets in touch with his inner Evil Kenevil on a dirt bike.

The film’s set for release in July of next year. Whether or not it’ll involve Vin Diesel or The Rock is unknown at this stage.
