[WATCH] The first trailer for Independence Day : Resurgence

Now that planet earth only has to wait a few more days to finally watch The Force Awakens, one might be forgiven for forgetting that the new Star Wars isn’t the only sci fi blockbuster in the pipeline.

Scheduled for next summer – that would be winter locally – Independence Day: Resurgence is the sequel to the 1996 popcorn flick, Independence Day, which saw nasty aliens invade earth with the intention of wiping out humankind. How rude!

The first trailer recently went live on the internet and, by all accounts, the aliens are giving their genocidal plans another go. Maybe it’s the absence of Will Smith in this movie that made them think the earth was a more vulnerable prospect.

The trailer serves up pretty much all the ingredients that made the first Independence Day a box office smash; big alien ships, huge explosions, dogfights in space and rousing speeches from President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) who in this trailer looks more like Santa Claus than the USA’s Commander In Chief.

[WARNING: HERE BE INDEPENDENCE DAY SPOILERS]

The trailer also hints that Independence Day: Resurgence is a heck of a lot darker than its predecessor, which, while serving up enough explosions to send Michael Bay into orbit, had a much more light-hearted tone. This was probably due to the fact that actors were required to deliver lines like, “should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday” with a straight face.

The first movie also expected audiences to believe the invaders could be defeated by the humans infecting their shield generating ship with a computer virus. Maybe the new alien software isn’t Windows compatible this time round…
