What LEGO master builders made for Brickcon SA 2015

Over this past weekend, in a small church in Brakpan, Brickcon took place.

Local fans of the brick could show off their creations, build some new ones, as well as partake in challenges such as trying to build a set blindfolded.

Festivities for the day started with a challenge for children, who had 20 minutes to build the best car they could. Once built, the cars were sent down a ramp with the winner was the vehicle that travelled the furthest.

After the adults had time to marvel at some of the weird cars the children made they were called on to do the same.

We took part in this event and figured the best way to win was to send something heavy down the ramp, so we stuck some wheels to the giant hull of a ship. We didn’t win (impact with another creation stole all our momentum), but our engineering was sound, dammit!

Although the the turnout was relatively small for the inaugural Brickathon – around two dozen people – the organisers Jason Datnow and Frans Gresse are happy with how it the event played out.

“For South Africa’s first Brickcon, it was a huge success. Playing together, laughing together, cementing of new and old friendships, all while increasing the spread of this new art form and expressive medium across the country,” said Gresse.

“We all enjoyed having so much support, and hope we can increase the amount of people contributing to better lives while playing [with] LEGO. Never stop building. For the love of the Brick: Brickcon South Africa.”

Below you’ll see some of the snaps we took of the creations we saw during the event. Make sure to see the comments for each if you want to know what they are.
