Zuckerberg family to donate 99% of Facebook stock “during our lives”

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg and his significant other, Dr. Priscilla Chan, have celebrated the birth of their daughter Max by announcing the formation of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

This initiative will see the Facebook family donating 99% of their Facebook stock, currently valued at $45 billion (R649 billion), to advance human potential and promote equality for all children.

The announcement formed part of a letter addressed to Max penned by Chan and Zuckerberg that was posted to Facebook. The couple outlined some of the advancements and good that is being done in the world before highlighting how issues like disease could be solved.

“For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do.”  Mark Zuckerberg

As a starting point, the initiative will focus on personalising learning, connecting more people to one another by building stronger communities and curing disease.

Zuckerberg also stressed the importance of the internet to his daughter saying, “The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created. Yet still more than half of the world’s population – more than 4 billion people – don’t have access to the internet.”

At this moment details regarding how the initiative will be meeting the goals the family hopes to achieve are still thin . Zuckerberg did mention that once he and his wife return from maternity and paternity leave, they will reveal more.

With initiatives such as Internet.org, The Primary School and now the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative already being backed by the Facebook founder, Zuckerberg seems to wants to make the world a better place, especially now that his own daughter is a part of it.
