[WATCH] Harbinger – a Lovecraftian horror shot in first-person

Gearmark Pictures brings us an eight-minute short film titled Harbinger which borrows heavily from the Lovecraft mythos as well as the first-person horror games which have become extremely popular in recent years.

First-person videogames are nothing new, but films have stuck to their tried-and-tested perspectives for decades. One of the biggest breakout changes for the film industry was the “found footage” genre that was made popular by the horror films The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.

Luckily, some smaller studios are breaking the mould, as you’ll see in Gearmark’s Harbinger.

As far as setup goes, you won’t need to know much for such a short film. The protagonist is led to a decidedly dodgy house by his nightmares, and it goes about as well as you’d expect.

Some details about the film were shared on an Imgur post: Harbinger was born out of a love for Lovecraft’s work as well as the unique opportunity to use a custom “face rig” camera which made the film possible.

That very camera added some production complications, as the main actor was part cameraman which meant he had to keep the scenes in-frame while acting at the same time.

Sound also played an integral part in the film design as traditional inserts and detail shots had to be scrapped to maintain the point of view. Because of this, the film begins with a suggestion to wear headphones, which we also suggest as it bumps up the immersion (and horror) appropriately.

We invite you to watch the short film – it’s really good – but we strongly suggest doing so in the comfort of your own home, as screaming like a small child at work may draw a bit of unwanted attention. And scream you will.

Enjoy!
