Matric 2015 maths pass rate down to below 50%

Matric results among maths learners who wrote the 2015 final exams are bitter-sweet, seeing as although more high marks were achieved, the overall pass mark has dropped below 50%.

The Ministry of Basic Education briefed the country on the results last night, revealing that a number of key subjects, as well as the overall matric 2015 results pass rate, have gone down.

The good news is that maths and physical science are among 12 key subjects which has seen an increase in the number of distinctions achieved, increasing from a cumulative amount of 59 981 in 2014 to 63 348 in 2015.

Maths has also shown an increase in the number of passes, going from 120 523 in 2014 to 129 481 in 2015, while the number of learners passing physical science has increased from 103 348 in 2014 to 113 121.

However, the maths and physical science pass rate has seen a continuous downward trend since 2014, going from 59.1% in 2013 to 53.5% in 2014 to 49.1% in 2015 for maths and from 67.4% in 2013 to 61.5% in 2014 to 58.5% for physics.

The national matric pass rate went down from 75.9% in 2014 to 70.7% in 2015.

The Western Cape yet again achieved the highest overall pass rate at 84.7%, up from 82.2% in 2014, while the Eastern Cape again stands at the bottom with a 56.8% pass rate, dropping from 65.4% in 2014.

KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Northern Cape also saw a drop in overall results.

Minister Motshekga noted that although her department is satisfied with the improvement in distinctions and passes achieved, particular attention must be paid to the poorest performing provinces if the overall NSC result are to improve.

“If we don’t do this, our basic education outputs and outcomes may not improve to the extent necessary,” Motshekga said.
