MSI’s biggest notebooks are about to get bigger

MSI has announced that select GT72 and GT80 notebooks will be refreshed to boast Desktop GeForce GTX 980 GPUs and bring virtual reality (VR) to notebooks.

Traditionally, VR has been the stamping ground of desktop PCs owing to the sheer amount of GPU horsepower needed to drive the technology. Last year, NVIDIA announced that it was releasing a desktop grade GeForce GTX 980 GPU designed for notebooks.

Prior to release, Team Green said that the mobile version of the GTX 980 (not the GTX 980M we’re accustomed to seeing in gaming notebooks) would raise notebook gamers to the same level as their desktop counterparts.

What this means, as MSI has demonstrated, is that you will no longer be confined to your desk to experience VR.

With the launch of refreshed models of MSI’s GT72 and GT80 notebooks we’ll finally see just how well this claim holds up. The specific models of these notebooks that will be receiving the upgrade are:

  • GT72S 6QF Dominator Pro
  • GT72S 6QF Dragon Edition (29th Anniversary Edition)
  • GT72S 6QF Dominator Pro G Heroes Special Edition
  • GT80S 6QF Titan SLI 29th Anniversary Edition
  • GT80S 6QF Titan SLI Heroes Special Edition

“VR has traditionally been reserved for desktops, but NVIDIA has given notebooks such as the MSI GT72 Dominator and GT80 Titan / SLI with GeForce GTX 980 the necessary punch to bring virtual experiences to life while on the go,” said President of MSI Pan America, Andy Tung.

We’ve reviewed iterations of the GT72S and the GT80S, both of which offered gamers-on-the-go great performance, provided they were willing pay the large asking prices.

There is no word yet as to when these notebooks will land in South Africa but if you think you may want one, the time to start saving is now.
