Your etolls debt has not mysteriously been erased

A number of motorists thought that they might have struck it lucky when checking their etolls balance.

The amount that they thought they owed for making use of the highways in Gauteng had mysteriously been reduced or disappeared altogether – but there is a catch.

At first glance, it would be completely reasonable to assume that the debt has been wiped away, but Electronic Toll Concession COO Mark Ridgway explains that any outstanding etoll debt is still very much there.

“Speculation that the system has written off debt is disinformation spread by individuals and organisations who continue to clutch at spurious conjecture in order to avoid facing the fact that payment must be made,” Ridgway said in a statement. “Those road users who believe that ongoing payments have not been credited correctly are also invited to make sure that all their accounts are settled.”

It is a bit of a complicated matter, but what is going on here, is that users have only been seeing the amount owed from 1 September 2015. Any etoll debt before that date has, according to ETC, been ring-fenced to qualify for the 60% discount.

“Road users that have subsequently received invoices and statements or enquired on the Violation Processing Centre website would only see balances due since 01 September 2015 and these amounts would exclude all prior outstanding balances that have been ring-fenced and are subject to a once off special 60% discount,” Ridgway said.

The main confusion came in when Democratic Alliance Gauteng provincial leader John Moodey said he hoped that Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s address last night “will be to announce the scrapping of e-tolls once and for all”.
