Parents with toddlers can now request a car seat-fitted Uber

Uber is testing out a riding option in Johannesburg that allows parents with toddlers to keep their children safe, while abiding by South African legislation.

Since May 2015, anyone travelling in a vehicle with a child younger than three years old has by law been obligated to have the child secured in a car seat.

Through UberFamily, the cab-hailing app allows you to request a cab fitted with a car seat

“We’re excited to be able to respond to the many queries we’ve received from riders, who are also parents, with UberFAMILY an experimental solution to travelling with young children,” Alon Lits, General Manager at Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, said in statement.

“With many young families, Johannesburg provides the perfect testing grounds and we look forward to providing parents with an alternative, safe and reliable transport option”, Lits added.

Uber said UberFamily will be operated only by drivers who’ve been using the app for a substantial amount of time and are also those with higher ratings that indicate previous rider satisfaction.

These drivers have already attended an in-depth information session to better help with the needs of UberFAMILY riders.

Each car seat is able to accommodate newborn babies as well as toddlers up to three years and children aged four.

To request UberFamily, request ‘UberVan + CARSEAT,’ located above the UberSUV option. Pricing of UberFamily is consistent with that of UberVAN (R22 Base fare, R1.6 p/m, R16 p/km, R75 Min Fare).
