Deadpool made R9.3 million in SA in its opening weekend

With Deadpool breaking records around the world for an R-rated movie (16LVS in South Africa), we finally have some solid numbers for its local earnings. The movie raked in R9.3 million between February 12th and 14th.

If Box Office Mojo is to be believed, the exact number sits somewhere around R9 397 114 played over 101 screens. We’ve also been told that around 150 000 people saw the movie over the weekend. Some quick and dirty maths says each paid an average of R62 per ticket.

To put that number into perspective, another successful adult movie in the country was 50 Shades of Grey, which pulled in $1 212 116 (R14 140 908 using the exchange rate from February 2015, the movies release month). It seems sex alone sells even better than sexy superheroes.

Another feather in Deadpool’s cap head is the fact that it’s also the third largest opening for a superhero movie, trailing behind Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron – two movies which were supported by a series of other films.

Many are predicting that this movie will set a precedent for Hollywood to put more faith in mature-content movies, instead of the family-friendly trend that has been popular in recent years.
