BMW unveils concept car with flexible bodywork on its 100th birthday

BMW has unveiled out a brand new concept car to celebrate its 100 year anniversary and it’s a jaw dropping piece of machinery.

The BMW Vision Next 100 Concept looks like it rolled right out of a science fiction film; its wheel arches seem to cover the tyres and when they turn, the bodywork flexes with them like it’s made out of inter-connective tissue. The visual effect makes the car look less like an automobile and more like an organic being. Naturally, since style is at a premium here, BMW’s new concept has sleek gull-wing doors.

“In developing the BMW Vision Next 100, the main objective was to create not an anonymous vehicle but one that is highly personalised and fully geared to meet the driver’s every need – because the very emotional connection between a BMW and its driver is something we want to retain,” BMW said in a statement.

The Vision Next 100 also boast a retractable steering wheel that can smoothly embed itself in the car’s dashboard. This means that drivers can switch between hands-on steering or autonomous driving.

When the self-driving mode is engaged, the interior rearranges itself for the passengers, turning the car into a kind of mobile lounge. BMW has called this mode ‘Ease’ and according to BMW, the interior transformation is to enable passengers to turn towards each other without straining.

The car also sports a feature called ‘Boost’, which assists the driver using sensor’s that can detect upcoming obstacles and potential incidents – such as a cyclist pulling out into traffic from behind a parked car.

To be honest the only feature missing from this beast is the fact it can’t fly. Aside from that, we want one. What do you make of it? Style over substance? Or drool-worthy investment? Let us know in the comments below.
