Leica cameras to make their way into Huawei smartphones

The rumour mill has just revealed further hints that Huawei will indeed be launching the P9 in April.

An invitation recently went out to media with the hashtag #OO, resembling the rumoured dual camera system it will employ. Regardless of the fact that we have seen leaked photos of the P9…

Now, Huawei has announced that it’s signed an agreement with camera and lens maker Leica.

Through a lofty-worded press release, it was explained that Huawei smartphones will now have Leica camera technology (and presumably the lenses) inserted on the factory floor. The two companies will also share research and development, design, co-engineering, user experience, marketing and retail distribution.

“Leica Camera will bring its values and comprehensive expertise in optical engineering to the long-term partnership with Huawei in order to achieve the best possible imaging results in the field of smartphone photography – and to take it to the next level of quality,” said Dr Andreas Kaufmann, chairman of the supervisory board of Leica Camera AG.

Naturally, Huawei is rather smitten with the business arrangement.

“We choose our partners carefully, and with this extraordinary collaboration we are offering our wide customer base and consumers the best elements of two expert brands in harmony: combining innovation and design, enhancing the user experience and continuing to inspire amazing advancement in human technology through exceptional premium imaging quality,” said Richard Yu, CEO of the Huawei Consumer.
