Gauteng parents will be able to register their kids at school online for 2017

[UPDATE: You can now use the GDE Admissions website to register yours and your child’s details and apply for admission in 2017. Check out this guide we’ve complied to show you to how use the website]

Parents registering their children for the 2017 academic year will no longer need a pen and paper to do so as this process will officially be done entirely online.

Gauteng MEC for education, Panyaza Lesufi, announced this new measure during a briefing on some of the updates and changes to be introduced to the province’s education system starting this year.

The 2017 registration has been set between 11th April and 7th Sept 2016.

Last year, the department launched the GDE Admissions portal, encouraging parents to use it as a platform to easily apply to register their children for the 2016 academic year without having to wait in queues at schools.

Parents still had to submit the necessary documents such as ID and birth certificates to the relevant schools in order for their children to be officially accepted.

At the moment, the portal is not live but will be as soon as registrations open.

From a few responses we received from parents who tried using it last year and the beginning of this year, there were a few glitches with the site and they were not able to fully take advantage of it.

Presumably, the department will have to look at sharpening the site’s efficiency to make this huge transition work.

Another important factor for the department to take not of is that some parents don’t have access to a computer or internet, and in some cases, may not even be computer literate enough to use the system.

htxt.africa has contacted the department for comment and we’ll provide an update on this once we’ve gotten a response from Lesufi’s team.

[UPDATE: Gauteng education spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe has told htxt.africa that the system has been upgraded based on the feedback received. Bodibe also added that parents who are applying for the first time will register both the parent and learner information online, while those who used the system in 2015 and whose information is with the department will verify/update both parent and learner information.

All parents will have to apply online, those without computers and/or internet access will be able to use computer labs at a public school closest to them]
