Uber adds two more African cities, bringing continental tally to 11

Uber is now available in 11 African cities after launching its operation in the city of Mombasa, Kenya and Abuja, Nigeria.

The expansion into Kenya’s second largest city and Nigeria’s capital city brings the total number of cities worldwide where the taxi-hailing service is available, to 400.

Last month, Uber also announced major expansions planned for three other major African countries: Uganda, Tanzania and Ghana, along with a strategy to avoid conflict with traditional taxi operators as was the case in a number of nations it had launched in.

“Uber is a new and exciting platform that is changing the way Kenyans move around their cities and we are shaping the future of cities across the world,”Kagure Wamunyu, Operations Manager for Uber Kenya said in a statement. “Mombasa is a cultural and economic hub as well as a popular tourist destination that has a need for safe, reliable and efficient transportation and we are so excited to be launching here.”

“Uber is part of a broader evolution in transportation, it is an exciting platform that is changing the way we travel and shaping the future of cities across the world,” added Alon Lits, Uber Sub-Sahran Africa General Manager.

“These cities are progressive, forward-thinking cities that have a need for safe, reliable and efficient transportation and we are so excited to be venturing further into Africa,” Lits said.

Earlier this month, Kenyan taxi operators in Mombasa expressed concern over Uber’s launch and the potentially negative effect it may have on their businesses.

Drivers are concerned that Uber will eat into their profits as metered taxis operate on a fixed cost per kilometre, while Uber offers flexible rates, meaning the playing field is anything but level. .
