Blackberry still has a bigger smartphone market share in South Africa than Apple

Here’s a little known fact that may have Apple fanboys (and girls) reeling: Apple handsets are not the most popular in South Africa’s smartphone market.

According to digital tracking company Effective Measure, the clear winner when it comes to what smartphone brand South Africans prefer, its Samsung.

“South Africans’ smart phone of choice is still Samsung, according to EM’s survey of mobile internet users during November and December 2015, conducted across smart phones and feature phones. Samsung, with 41 percent market share of those surveyed, has continued its reign,” Effective Measure said in a press statement.

Furthermore, Blackberry 13 percent of South Africa’s smartphone market share, while Apple is still way behind the big players with six percent. Sony, LG and HTC are bringing up the rear sitting at five, two and one percent respectively.

With more people on the move and the ability to access business accounts and features, the report also noted that people are spending more time on their chosen devices.

“32 percent of respondents spend more than three hours a day on their mobile device, and 19 percent spend more than 5 hours. Interestingly, 39 percent of respondents admit to use their phone to access the internet while in the bathroom, and 12 percent while driving,” it noted.

To no surprise really, some of the most used functions on a smartphone are searching Google, social networks, accessing email and instant messaging. Interestingly, less than 20 percent of the people surveyed said that they use a smartphone to send and receive SMS messages.
