#GautengBudgetSpeech2016: Public broadband network gets R325 million

The Gauteng provincial government has allocated R325 million towards the province’s Broadband Network project for the 2016/17 financial year.

The province’s MEC of finance, Barbara Creecy, delivered the Gauteng Budget Speech 2016 at the Gauteng Legislature in the Johannesburg city centre this morning.

The budgeted amount will go towards connecting new 300 sites and maintenance of the network. The total budget for the new financial year stands at R103 billion up from R97 billion last year.

The Gauteng Broadband Network plans to connect all government buildings, Thusong centres, urban renewal zones and targeted economic zones across the province.

R1.2 billion was budgeted over four years starting in 2015 for the entire project.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura in his 2016 State of the Province Address last month said that the network will, in the next three years, have covered all cities, towns and regions within the province.
