Overwatch gets an official release date

Blizzard’s team-based shooter, Overwatch, has been given an official release date of 24th May and an open beta will run from 5th – 9th May.

The core premise of the game involves two teams of six players each trading projectiles and trying to capture points, escorting vehicles or controlling a zone as the enemy team attempts to turn you into paint.

While it sounds very much like most shooters out there, Overwatch feels more like a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game like League of Legends or Dota where each character has unique abilities, weapons and roles.

So with the release date set for 24th May Blizzard has decided to do just one more beta test before opening the flood gates. From 5th May gamers will be able to participate in the the Openwatch open beta. Those that have pre-ordered the game can get into the beta early from 3rd May.

We do hope that Blizzard is using this open beta test to stress test its servers and prevent some thing like error 37 from happening again. We haven’t forgotten Blizzard, we’ll never forget.

Blizzard has also announced a retail-only Collector’s Edition which will contain the Origins version of the Overwatch game, a Solider 76 statue which measures around 28cm, a steelbook, full colour artbook and the Overwatch soundtrack.

Now, we suggest you sit down before we mention the price. Sitting comfortably? Good.

The price of the Collector’s Edition is going to cost R2 592 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on Raru. If your wallet is currently quivering in fear there is another option, the game alone can be pre-ordered for R862 on PC and R979 of Xbox One and PS4.

Still in two minds? Check out the gameplay trailer and try to resist your urge to play as Tracer, Reaper or any of the awesome characters Blizzard has dreamed up.
