This ASUS router may look like a UFO but it can clock speeds of up to 2167Mbps

We know that WiFi tech has improved over the years, and that in 2016 if you have the right equipment, it’s plenty fast. Having seen the latest router from the ASUS stable, however, we’re left wondering just how fast WiFi can actually go.

The ASUS RT-AC5300 is the successor to the ASUS RT-AC3200 that we tested out a while ago, and one of the first things you’ll notice is that ASUS has upped the ante significantly over previous models, certainly in terms of antenna count.

Surrounding the outer border of the RT-AC5300 are eight, yes, EIGHT, antennae. These antennae bring 802.11ac WiFi standards to your home, or as we found with the AC-3200, your small office.

Once again ASUS has opted for a tri-band setup with one 2.4GHz band capable of speeds of up to 1 000Mbps and two 5GHz bands capable of reaching speeds of up to 2 167Mbps.

While the antennas are impressive, the performance is pretty incredible as well.

The router also comes bundled with all the goodies you’ve come to expect from the high-end range of routers ASUS manufactures for the prosumer market.

Included you’ll find AiProtection, developed in conjunction with Trend Micro, to secure your network; AiCloud so you can stream your content to your smartphone or your TV, and of course, support for the ASUS Router app for your phone/tablet.

All of this networking glory does have a rather hefty price tag though: ASUS tells us that the router currently retails from R6 800 in stores.

Of course, routers this crazy are really for people looking for a no-compromise network or an office where a large amount of bands means less downtime and less speed decrease, as more people join the network.
