DJI and GoPro form new advocacy group for flying drones

Over the last year or so, one of the most contentious issues in the tech world has been drones and the flying thereof.

As the technology grows, many countries have implemented (or are talking about implementing) rules and regulations as to where, when and how they can be flown.

To develop “policies that promote innovation and safety, and create a practical and responsible regulatory framework,” major drone makers DJI, 3DR, Parrot and GoPro have branched off from the two-year old Small UAV Coalition, to form their own Drone Manufacturers Alliance (DMA).

The mission of the newly-created DMA is to lobby interested parties on the usefulness of drones, and to advocate for drone safety.

“The Drone Manufacturers Alliance believes a carefully-balanced regulatory framework requires input from all stakeholders, and must recognise the value and necessity of continued technological innovation. By highlighting innovation and emphasising education, we intend to work with policymakers to ensure drones continue to be safely integrated into the national airspace,” it said in a statement.

The split, according to Tech Crunch, is probably due to the fact that the Small UAV Coalition is focussed more towards the commercial side of drone flying, while the manufacturer-focussed Drone Manufacturers Alliance is geared up for consumers.

“As long as this doesn’t lead to unnecessary turf wars, having two organizations that essentially advocate for the same issues doesn’t have to be a bad thing, especially if the Small UAV coalition now gets to focus on commercial drone usage and the Drone Manufacturer Coalition on consumer issues,” it wrote.
