Xbox boss not a fan of incremental upgrades

Rumours started to swirl a while back that Microsoft may release an upgraded Xbox One, or at least the components to upgrade the gaming console at home. This affectionately became known as the Xbox One-and-a-half.

But there is a bit of a problem with those rumours, in the fact that Xbox head Phil Spencer isn’t exactly the biggest fan of releasing an Xbox with incremental hardware updates.

“I’m not a big fan of Xbox One-and-a-half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers,” Spencer told GameInformer.

He added that he doesn’t really see the point in pushing out small updates, and if it was going to happen, it would involve bigger upgrades than what is being rumoured.

“I don’t know anything about any of the rumours that are out there, but I can understand other teams’ motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people – an upgrade.”

The tech world is a bit of a funny beast, and Spencer and his team might just be stalling in order to see what Sony comes up with when it releases the 4K-enabled PS4 – which is pretty much a certainty, although nothing has been definitively confirmed as yet.

But who knows, right? We might not see incremental upgrades or DIY components, but we could be looking at an Xbox One Elite console before Christmas.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this, especially around whether you’d pay cash money to “upgrade” your current-gen consoles this early in their life cycles.
