First trailer for Dr Strange released

Marvel has dropped the trailer for the upcoming Dr Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular sorcerer.

The trailer first aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the USA last night and has now spread across the web like wildfire.

In typical fashion for a Marvel film, the teaser contains a ton of seemingly-disconnected scenes with a ton of fade-to-blacks. However, there’s enough in here for us to start picking away at.

First, though, behold: the new Dr Strange trailer.

Despite being set in the same universe as Iron Man, Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D., Dr Strange stories feature sorcery and the occult. While The Avengers may be clobbering the hell out of Norse Gods and rogue robots, Strange’s adversaries are usually evil mages and bloodthirsty demons. The trailer contains both the dark tone of the comics and its occasionally mind-bending visuals.

Apart from Mr Cumberbatch as Strange, the trailer reveals Tilda Swinton (she of Constantine and Michael Clayton) as the sorcerer’s mentor, the Ancient One. Chiwetel Ejiofor (who starred in 12 Years A Slave and Dirty, Pretty Things) features as a sword-carrying Baron Mordo who, in the comic books, is one of the good doctor’s main villains. We also catch a glimpse of Rachel McAdams (who played Catwoman in the Dark Knight Rises) as one of Strange’s hospital colleagues.

If you wanted another reason to see this film, note that Mads Mikkelsen (who played Hannibal in the TV series of the same name) is in it. We’ll watch anything with Mads in it. Even Clash Of The Titans. Shut up.

One confusing aspect of the trailer is that it only shows a silhouette of Dr Strange once he’s donned his cloak and collar. Why? Does Marvel think it’ll be a big reveal that it can save for later? There are oodles of pictures of it online and hey, Benedict Cumberbatch sauntered into a comic book shop in New York dressed as Dr Strange last week, so his costume isn’t exactly a massive secret!

The movie is out in November; we can’t wait!
