Limpopo to start free set top box registrations this weekend

Limpopo is set to be the fifth province in the country to begin registering under privileged households for free set top boxes (STB) in time for the digital broadcast migration.

The Department of Communications will this Sunday, 17th April, launch its digital terrestrial television (DTT) awareness campaign in Tiyani ka Magoro village.

Households that have an income of less R3 200 a month and have a valid TV licence will be able to register to receive a free government-subsidised STB.

The department, led by Minister Faith Muthambi, has been conducting an awareness campaign in rural areas across the country since 2015.

The Northern Cape was the first province to begin registrations in early 2015 and since then, over 12 000 households have registered with the South African Post Office to receive STBs.

Limpopo, Free State and Mpumalanga also began registrations last year.

The first set top boxes were delivered to three households in Keimoes and three in Kakamas, both in the Northern Cape on 17th December.

Muthambi will explain the importance of DTT and STBs at the weekend’s campaign.
