Over 140 Smart ID and passports applications completed via eHome Affairs

The Department of Home Affairs has seen over 140 Smart ID and passport applications successfully completed on the eHome Affairs portal since it launched last week.

The department’s director-general, Mkuseli Apleni, said applications were processed and completed across all four major South African banks part of the project –  Absa, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank.

Apleni added that so far, 4088 citizens have registered through the portal.

eHome Affairs experienced a number of technical issues on the day of launch and was taken down for some time, due to the high number of traffic to the portal.

“We rely on a throttling mechanism which currently allows for 600 concurrent hits,” Apleni said.

The lowest numbers of applications were experienced during the past weekend with Sunday receiving the lowest online submissions. Appointments to scan fingerprints, have photos taken and complete the process have been booked up to the end of April, according to Apleni.

“We have established a steering committee to continually monitor the implementation and performance of the system,” he added.

Apleni said should anyone experience problems during the application process, they should not contact their bank but rather call Home Affairs on 0800 60 11 90 for help.
