Watch the beautiful Aurora Borealis in eye-watering 4K thanks to NASA

After skydiving, shark cage diving and bungee jumping, you’re most likely to come across “see the Northern Lights” on most people’s bucket lists.

That fantastic show of coloured lights in the sky, known scientifically as Aurora Borealis (or Aurora Australis if they happen in the southern part of the globe), is also something you may never see if you can’t afford a plane ticket to Iceland. Thankfully, NASA has us covered.

On its official YouTube channel, we found the unimaginatively named video “Stunning Aurora Borealis from Space in Ultra-High Definition (4K)“. We could talk about what it entails, but we think you already know.

It’s beautiful to behold and naturally, it’s also a great advertisement for 4K in general. We watched the above clip at 720 p, 1080 p, and finally at the full 2 160 p (I.E. 4K) resolutions, and it’s flat out staggering.

While this resolution isn’t cost prohibitive at the moment, it’s content like this that makes us excited about these technologies eventually becoming the standard. It may seem like a lofty goal right now, but it wasn’t that long ago that good old Full HD was a lofty dream locked away by exorbitant prices. You probably have a device capable of it in your pocket right now.

While you could go out and buy a 4K display right now (like this great AOC monitor) and eat plain toast for the next few months, make the effort to sneak into a store selling them and bring up this story to watch that video at the highest fidelity. We promise its worth your time.

If you still want some space beauty without the high barrier of entry, check out some images from the Hubble telescope in ultraviolet.
