You might not need a Galaxy phone for the next Gear VR headset

Samsung is looking at bringing out a version of its Gear VR headset that doesn’t require a rather expensive Galaxy S6 or S7.

That’s according to Injong Rhee, Samsung’s head of R&D for software and services, who told Variety as much.

“We are working on wireless and dedicated VR devices, not necessarily working with our mobile phone. VR is amazing, but the industry is still at its infancy,” he said.

That would be absolutely fantastic, as we have played around with another VR headset and rather enjoyed ourselves, but it was rather bulky and expensive and required a rather powerful PC to get the most from it.

Samsung’s Gear VR is by far the best headset to use for when it comes to VR done with a mobile phone and headset, but as the S6 or S7 required for it to work cost over R10 000 each, its appeal has been somewhat limited.

As the new headset likely won’t use a phone and thus won’t have a built-in storefront with apps, we have to wonder what sort of ecosystem will support it, as well as how much it will cost since current standalone headsets like the Vive and Oculus Rift are in the R12 000+ range. Sammy’s not talking about that quite yet, however.

Samsung did add that it is aiming to make the creation of 360-degree VR content easier to make with Gear 360 and other VR cameras.

Going on what we’ve seen about VR so far, there is no doubt it’s just getting started; this year will possibly lay the groundwork for better systems to come in the very near future.

By Samsung director of software development Andrew Dickerson’s own admission, “We think 2016 is shaping up to be the year of VR.”
