Now Kimberley Airport is solar powered too

A happy news story to round off the week: according to a press release just sent out by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) a second regional airport has gone partly off grid thanks to R13.5million solar power station opened today.

Kimberley Airport in the Northern Cape joins the one at George, whose personal power station was formally commissioned back in February.

Details on the capacity of the station have been released. According to ACSA the 500KW installation consists of 1620 photovoltaic panels over a 0.7 hectare area of land, and should produce just under a million kilowatt hours in its first year of operation.

Plans are afoot to add similar systems to the other airports in the area: work has apparently begun at Uppington already, and Port Elizabeth, East London and Bram Fischer in Bloemfontein are next. Will update with more details as we get them.
