Next digital ambassadors readying to educate Joburgers on tech

The City of Joburg is continuing its drive towards a Smart City by training 24 young digital ambassadors who will, in turn, train communities in digital literacy.

Announced last year, the Digital Ambassadors programme partners with Harambee Youth Empowerment Accelerator and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to recruit unemployed youths with a matric or higher qualification.

These youths are trained in basic digital skills and have been sent out into Joburg communities, particularly townships, to pass their skills on so residents are able to make the best of services such as free WiFi.

Ambassadors use the Maru A Jozi online portal, which provides access to a number of free online services, to train communities.

“Besides being provided with a tablet to train community members, digi-entrepreneurs will also be mentored in business acumen to enable them to use technology to create innovation for their own enterprises,” the city said.

Each Ambassador earns R50 for every member of the community they train.

The first batch of Ambassadors began training at the UJ Kingsway campus last year.

Ambassadors gathered at the Klipfontein Multipurpose Centre in the city’s Region E, with other such meetings to follow throughout the city over the next few days.

“This is why we are investing so much in the youth of this city. This is in line with our developmental local government approach to the implementation of the 2040 Growth and Development Strategy,” said Joburg Mayor, Parks Tau in a press statement.
