Watch: Awkward “Thanks SABC” song composed to appreciate 90% local music

The SABC has commissioned and released a song to thank itself for the decision to have 90% local music played across all its radio stations and we can only describe it as, um, awkward.

Composed and lead by legendary South African poet, Mzwakhe Mbuli, along with the likes of Deborah Fraser, Kholeka Sobiso and Solly Moholo, “Thank You SABC” was aired today on Morning Live on SABC 2 and the 18 public radio stations.

The song borrows its theme from 1950’s Sophiatown jive and also also happens to praise SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, who is behind the decision to trial the new music airplay format for the next three months.

According to Mbuli, Thank You SABC represents all of South Africa’s diverse languages and cultures and is strictly afrocentric.

Reports that have been circulating today state that Motsoeneng has ordered all radio stations to put the song on regular rotation throughout the day.

The full song’s video and audio download will reportedly be released tomorrow.

In the meantime, here’s a snippet of it below and judge for yourself how strange it is on a scale of 1 – 10.
