Acer joins forces with a game dev for its VR headset

Virtual Reality (VR) has gone from being a novelty to something that every man and his dog is seemingly developing for – and the latest entrant to the race is Acer.

Although Acer is well behind the likes of Samsung, Sony and LG, it is at least doing something slightly different with its VR tech.

The technology company will be working on a VR headset together with game developer Starbreeze to develop StarVR for the “professional- and location-based entertainment market.” According to some reports, that is fancy talk for “theme parks” and “arcades”.

“Since our launch in June 2015, we have had an amazing start with StarVR. By partnering with Acer we shift gears yet again to firmly position us as the leader in top-end VR experiences,” said Bo Andersson Klint, Starbreeze CEO.

Colour us surprised, but StarVR was actually announced at last year’s E3, and by January this year “Starbreeze unveiled its location-based StarCade initiative, introducing VR centers looking to allowing customers to immerse themselves into premium VR experiences.”

Talk about flying under the radar…

The company has taken its tech on the road, with its latest outing to the Cannes Film Festival in France, where it showed off an experience called Cockatoo Spritz.

“Starbreeze additionally premiered its first cinematic VR experience “Cockatoo Spritz” directed by Stephane Barbato in Cannes during the first week of the festival. Visitors in Cannes can preview the experience by invitation to the exclusive cocktail party taking place Sunday May 15 or by appointment up until May 20th 2016.”

We better dust off our tux then.

If you are unfamiliar with Starbreeze Studios, it is the studio behind games like Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and the Syndicate reboot of 2012.
