Watch a Star Wars dogfight created with drones

We’d be lying if we said that participating in a space battle set in the Star Wars universe wasn’t on our bucket list, as impossible as that may be.

Luckily, there are drones and cameras to fill the gap.

To oversimplify the brilliant work done by YouTube channel CorridorDigital, this is a simulated dogfight between drones. The drones, however, are worth stopping to look at. All of them are quadcopters that are modelled after an X-Wing, TIE fighter and a TIE Advanced (you know, that one Darth Vader pootled around in).

To create the effect of piloting the starfighters yourself, first person footage is overlaid with the cockpit designs of the crafts. These cockpits were 3D printed and then filmed with a GoPro. Once all the filming was done, the two pieces of footage were combined with some fancy editing and, look at that mom, I’m flying a damn X-Wing.

We also have to commend the brilliant wordplay done here. If you picked up on the silly narrative, the X-Wing is being piloted by an R2-D2 and the TIE Advanced is being piloted by an evil R2 unit. R2 units are droid… or drones, if you will.

If you still need more, there’s a behind the scenes video showing how this was achieved, or you could read some “theories” behind Episode VIII or even a really great Star Wars game you probably missed.  Hell, call in sick today and re-watch the original trilogy, you deserve it (just you try it! – ed).
