ANC accused of cutting off water in KZN to make itself look good

In one of the most confusing and controversial claims of underhanded electioneering, the ANC reportedly cut off water in a KwaZulu-Natal community, so it could bring water tanks in and appear to be taking care of its people.

This is according to a report in the Sunday Times which states that taps were turned off in the Pietermaritzburg area two weeks ago as instructed by the ANC Moses Mabhida regional office and water tanks were brought in to make the party seem like it was coming to the rescue.

The incident was revealed in a memo discussed by the regional executive committee during a meeting on 23rd May.

The memo states that this decision was in build up to the 3rd August Municipal Elections.

“Water is an area that needs this attention as it causes great consternation. We suggest that the officials engage some of the comrades in the district as a water service authority with a view of controlling the supply of water,” the memo read.

“Wherever there is a water shortage, trucks need to be on standby to supply water when the valves are switched off. In this way, the people are not prejudiced, as they will witness first-hand government in action,” it said.

Various ANC members have given conflicting accounts with some confirming the existence of the memo.

The region’s chairman, Mthandeni Dlungwana, however denied any knowledge of the memo and threatened to sue the Sunday Times.

The DA has said it will write to the Public Protector and to the IEC to request an investigation into allegations.

“This abusive conduct manipulates the most vulnerable people in South Africa. Again, the ANC has been revealed as an organization that governs like black lives do not matter,” DA provincial leaders, Zwakele Mncwango said.

“This is also flagrant abuse of the constitutionally guaranteed right to access to water and we contend that this amounts to a gross abuse of state resources,” he added.
