Cape Town drone photographer captures the rich/poor divide

Drone photography is fast establishing itself as one of the most creative modern mediums.

For a look at what some aspiring artists are capable of, check out the awesome footage captured by entrants into the New York City Drone Film Festival (NYCDFF).

Our latest artistic find is Cape Town drone photographer Johnny Miller. In an exhibition titled ‘Unequal Scenes’, he’s set out to demonstrate the stark reality of the often-physical divide between poor and the rich in South Africa.

“Unequal Scenes portrays scenes of inequality in South Africa from the air,” he explains on the exhibition’s Facebook page.

According to PetaPixel, the exhibition started as a single Facebook post – but that quickly changed when the aerial photo showing the divide between the Masiphumelele community and the neighboring suburb of Lake Michelle got shared more than 1 000 times.

Taking that one image and turning it into a full exhibition, Miller set out with his Inspire 1 drone to capture more scenes to show the divide between poor and rich from the sky.

“Discrepancies in how people live are sometimes hard to see from the ground. The beauty of being able to fly is to see things from a new perspective – to see things as they really are. Looking straight down from a height of several hundred meters, incredible scenes of inequality emerge,” Miller explains on the website.

Miller adds that he decided to expand the project to cover more of South Africa in the hope of sparking a debate.

“My desire with this project is to portray the most Unequal Scenes in South Africa as objectively as possible,” he says. “By providing a new perspective on an old problem, I hope to provoke a dialogue which can begin to address the issues of inequality and disenfranchisement in a constructive and peaceful way.”

Have a look for yourself on the project’s website and let us know what you think. While it highlights a serious problem, the images are fantastic.
