Facebook adds support for 360-degree photos

Well, Facebook has announced that you will from today users will be able to upload 360-degree photos to the social network.

“People will be able to discover these photos on your Page or right in News Feed, where they can pan around and explore the scene by simply moving the phone around or clicking and dragging on web — much as they can with 360 videos,” Facebook said in a media statement.

Facebook added support for 360-degree videos a while back.

If you think that you might need a rather expensive 360-degree camera to make it work, the company explained that there are three ways in which you can do it:

  • Take a panorama with an iOS device or Samsung Galaxy phone
  • Capture a 360-degree photo on your phone using an app like Street View or Google Camera
  • Take a 360-degree photo with a 360 camera, such as the Samsung Gear 360, RICOH THETA S, 360Fly, Giroptic 360 Cam, ALLie Camera or Panono.

“When you share your photo to Facebook, we’ll convert it to a fully immersive 360 photo. People on Facebook will be able to identify 360 photos in News Feed by the compass icon on the right-hand side of the photo.”

It also added that people will be able to explore Facebook 360 photos in virtual reality with the Samsung Gear VR, by tapping “View in VR” while using a supported Samsung device.
