Minecraft movie has a release date

The hugely popular creative sandbox game Minecraft has been tipped for the silverscreen treatment for some time now.

Developer Mojang said that the movie was in production as far back as 2014 and last year, Rob McElhenney, star and creator of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia was assigned to direct the film.

Now Minecraft: The Movie has a release date. Fans, however, will have to wait for quite a while before they get to see it.

Over on Mojang’s official website, the developer has announced that the Minecraft movie will see release on May 24th in 2019. Yes, that’s just about three years from now.

To be fair, Mojang is addresses the fact that the movie’s release date is a long way off.

“That might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome,” the developer said on its website. “And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?”

We certainly do, especially since most movies based on video games are middling at best and absolutely awful at worst.

Mojang also revealed that the film will be released in 3D and on IMAX.

We have to confess, that we find the whole idea of a Minecraft film a little weird. The game is not exactly renowned for its strong plot or narrative. With that in mind, we had some of our staff in the office submit a pitch for their Minecraft film.

Stampy’s Lovely World (for it is he) is invaded by marauding orcs and the undead from a nearby World of Warcraft server. The Horde forces are motivated by a desire to find out where their subscribers have gone, and begin a campaign of destruction in order to lure young gamers back to the Blizzard MMO.

Naturally Stampy wins them over with his ebullient Midlands’ charm and the assistance of gruff northerner thingamajig-Squid and Amy, by the end of the movie they combined forces of Stampy and the Horde begin reconstructing Ogrimar out of Redstone.

My Minecraft pitch: we’re proud to announce the Minecraft® Movie™! True to the game, viewers will be given the ultimate open-ended experience. Their movie ticket gets them rental of a camera, green-screen and CGI artist.

From here viewer can create any movie they like, as long as it looks block and has dated visuals! The Minecraft® Movie™, why make a movie when your audience can?
