MMA applauds SABC CEO’s resignation, while EFF not so welcoming

The resignation of Jimi Matthews from his position as acting SABC CEO, signals just how bad things at the public broadcaster are.

This is according to Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), who spoke to htxt.africa shortly after Matthews publicly announced that he’d quit this morning.

MMA Director, William Bird, told htxt.africa that the media lobby group welcomed the decision by Matthews to step down, adding that it is never too late for one to do the right thing.

“We hope others at the SABC can take strength from Jimi Matthews’s resignation. This also calls for interventions in the matter by parliament,” Bird said.

EFF offers scathing opinion on matter

The EFF, on the other hand, were not so welcoming of the resignation.

“In all that happened in SABC, Jimi Matthews was central. He signed the ICASA affidavit defending editorial decisions to ban protest coverage,[sic]” the party said on Twitter.

“Mr Jimi Matthews cannot speak about what is happening “inside the SABC” when he never put up any fight within! As acting CEO, he is the SABC.[sic]

No comment from SABC yet

The public broadcaster is yet to officially comment on the matter. We’ve tried to get in contact with its spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, whose phone has been ringing unanswered.
