Presidency: Beware of “Nkandla donations” social media scam

The Office of the Presidency has warned South Africans about a social media scam trying to solicit money under the pretence of donating to President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla repayments.

Yesterday, the National Treasury announced that, based from Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s recommendations, President Jacob Zuma must pay R7.8 million for non-security upgrades to his homestead in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

There have now been scams circulating on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, asking people to deposit money into bank accounts in support of President Zuma.

“No account has been opened for this purpose and no request has been made for members of the public to contribute,” the presidency said.

Meanwhile, the ANC is KwaZulu-Natal has reportedly asked members to make contributions towards the repayment

“We support each other in the movement when it’s nice and when it’s difficult. We can’t say because this is a matter which is the result of a court decision that therefore supporting the president is something we’re going to ashamed of,” provincial spokesperson, Mdumiseni Ntuli, told EWN.
