SA studio wins big at “Oscars for animation”

Triggerfish, the South African animation studio best known for its motion pictures Welcome to Zambezia and Khumba, both of which featured a cast of Hollywood actors including Liam Neeson and Samuel L Jackson, has notched up another triumph. It’s TV feature Stick Man, shown at Christmas, has won the prestigious Le Cristal award at the Annecy festival for animated film.

Annecy is often referred to as the “Oscars for animation”, and Stick Man won the highest honour in the category for films commissioned for TV.

Stick Man is based on a children’s book by Julia Richardson, originally illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The pair are best known for the hugely popular Gruffalo and Room on the Broom, which have also been turned into animated movies.

Triggerfish’s film was commissioned by the BBC in the UK and was produced by Magic Light Pictures. It was co-directed by South African Daniel Snaddon. The cast included Martin Freeman (best known for playing Watson in the BBC series Sherlock and Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy) and comedian Jennifer Saunders. On its Christmas Day debut it was watched by more than 10m people.

The firm says it is currently working on another BBC production for this year’s Christmas Day viewing, based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

We’ll be following up with an interview with Daniel Sneddon, but congratulations to all involved!
