Discovery Vitality and FitBit are friends again

Discovery Vitality once again supports the FitBit activity tracker.

In March this year Discovery Vitality came under some fire for a number of changes it made to how members earn Active Rewards. It’s a programme that monitors activity levels of Discovery Vitality clients using various wearable motion-sensing trackers, and rewards them according to the measurements produced.

One of the fitness-tracking devices that got removed from official support was FitBit; Discovery said at the time that the device’s reporting structure was incompatible with Vitality.

Agreement reached

It seems that the two parties have come to an agreement to solve those issues.

“Fitbit and Vitality are now successfully integrated to share heart rate and speed data. Thank you for your patience as we worked with the Fitbit team to ensure that you are rewarded for getting active and tracking your fitness activity,” Vitality said on its websites.

In March CEO Dr Shrey Viranna explained why support for FitBit was dropped. “We are working in a very collaborative way with FitBit but right now the way the data format comes through to us isn’t useable for the tables that we have shared with our members.”

The company said in a recent press statement that if you have a Fitbit Surge, Fitbit Charge HR or Fitbit Blaze, you will now be able to earn Vitality points for tracking your heart rate. It also confirmed that if your preferred fitness device can also track speed activity, then you’ll be eligible for those points as well.

Take these steps

In order to start earning points for speed activity and heart rate tracking, follow these easy steps:

  • Log into your Vitality profile on www.discovery.co.za or via the Discovery app.
  • Visit your fitness devices and apps page and click ‘De-link’.
  • Click ‘Link my Fitbit account’.
  • Follow the steps to re-link your Fitbit device directly to Vitality.

The company did warn that “…you will only earn speed activity and heart rate points once the above re-linking steps have been completed. Workouts done prior to this re-linking will not count towards your weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals.”
